New Wave Animation

This programme offers a unique perspective on animation, as it explores innovative and experimental techniques that go beyond traditional storytelling methods. With a focus on creating a deeper and more sensory experience, the programme aligns with the principles of expanded cinema, which aim to expand the boundaries of cinema to incorporate other art forms. The works featured in the programme utilise new methodologies and practices, such as real-time engines, motion-capture, machine learning, algorithmic animation, glitch and hyperrealistic materials. It encourages audiences to experience the physical presence of animation, and to accept it as something that transcends reality. (2020)

Japanese Art studio Onesal has launched a self initiated series of four short films proposing a novel visual approach to explain it. Visual ASMR, or Visual Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response. ASMR is the subjective experience of euphoria characterized by a combination of positive feelings and a distinct static-like tingling sensation on the skin.

Natural sculpture formations set in seemingly impossible earth-like landscapes covered by living elements of surreal colors, each film travel through each almost at a micro level, witnessing its evolution. All takes place in four other-worldly landscapes we set up to examine up close the interaction, movements and evolution of the elements with their surroundings.

Each of the shorts are inspired by elements in nature, architecture and timelapse photography. The body of work delves into textural, tactile elements morphing and interacting with each other in surreal environments. The work set off to blur the boundaries between nature and design, simplicity and complexity, in an abstract uncompromised way.

This music video was initially created on the computer using several pieces of 3D animation software. After the digital version was finalized, all 1,480 frames of the video were then individually printed using ink jet printers. Once an image was printed, it was then painted, drawn, and illustrated on top of using traditional animation techniques. Lastly, the newly illustrated frames were scanned back into the computer and sequenced into the final film.

Promenade is a film that explores the logic and aesthetics of autonomous vehicles’ computer-vision systems. A drone flying through the secluded forests of Vallee de Joux (Switzerland) analyses the landscapes around it with meticulous precision. Different from the human experience, nature is observed and decoded with complete detachment. Contemplating natural environments through such technological apparatuses becomes an opportunity to devise new modes of visual synthesis and create new interpretations of the traditional “landscape”.

AUJIK's fascination with Shenzhen’s unique urban planning origates from its rapid growth and its architecturally-organized/structured superiority than most other cities in that scale. It has large lush green areas flanked by humongous steel and concrete complex covered in glass that reflects the greenery in to a gorgeous palate.

Artist express visually the city as a self-conscious computer landscape were each building symbolize a component that is attached and correlated to each other similar to how a computer is constructed. Each building having their particular attribute and capacity that creates a fabulous and comprehensive machinery when they are attached. This machinery could potentially re-generate and manufacture new components/buildings in an endless evolution.
